Slater’s Menswear: Style, Stories & the Spirit of Goodison

Slater's Menswear on Williamson Street in town is known for suits, sharp threads—and a deep passion for Everton. Most of the staff are Blues through and through. Ken Morris, a lifelong Evertonian, has a chapter in The Real Fans’ Tales. “All my family are Evertonians—apart from the missus, who’s a Red... but that’s her only fault! My kids are sad to be leaving Goodison after so many memories, but they’re looking forward to our new home on the banks of the Royal Blue Mersey.”

Ken was impressed with the book: “It’s great to read other people’s memories and stories about Goodison Park. I loved the little quotes and pictures—really well put together.”

As for standout moments, one game comes to mind: “The European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final against Bayern Munich—absolutely incredible atmosphere. Hard to top that.” His favourite player growing up? “Big Bob Latchford. I was there when he scored his 30th goal in the 6-0 hammering of Chelsea in 1978. Unforgettable!

Ken’s colleague Christine Couch bought the book for her father, Bill Everett—a long-suffering Evertonian. “I’m actually the only Blue in the house. I married a Red, and now my son’s a Red too! I go to the games with my cousin and dad.” She added, “He’s delighted with the book—the effort and love that’s gone into it is clear. It’s fabulous to read all the different fan stories. For my dad, it’s Alex Young and Alan Ball all day long. The Bayern Munich semi-final stands out for him too.”

And what’s Derby Day like in a mixed household? Christine laughs: “It’s always interesting—lots of banter. Friendly… mostly!”
