A Matchday in the Life: Three Generations, One Club, One Unforgettable Day!

Tommy Wheeldon Junior has been an Evertonian since 1979. Born in Old Swan and now living in Canada—where he recently guided Cavalry F.C. to a Canadian Premier League title—his passion for the Blues has never faded.

On Sunday 26th November 2023, Tommy made a special pilgrimage home. He flew across the Atlantic with his son, Jax, to meet his dad outside Goodison Park. Three generations of Wheeldons together—linked not just by blood, but by Everton Football Club.

“My dad was on Everton’s books between 1976 and 1978, and he used to tell me all the stories about Goodison,” Tommy said. “To share that with Jax, to walk into the ground side by side with my dad and my son, was something I’ll never forget.”

The atmosphere that day was electric. Everton had just been hit with a 10-point deduction, and the fans weren’t staying quiet.

“You could feel the anger, the unity,” Tommy recalled. “‘Corrupt’ leaflets were being handed out, banners were everywhere—the Spirit of the Blues was on full display.

Before the game, the family visited St Luke’s Church for memorabilia, then grabbed fish and chips from the Blue Dragon on Goodison Road. “We did it all properly,” he said. “It was Jax’s first time at Goodison—he had to see it the right way.”

Inside the ground, Z-Cars rang out, the Old Lady roared, and the protest banners rose into the air. Despite an early goal for Manchester United, the fans never stopped. “It wasn’t about the scoreline,” Tommy said. “It was about standing up together, fighting for our club.”

After the match, he turned to Jax and said, “You’ve just seen what this club is really about. This is the Spirit of the Blues.
